Earth

Earth is located on Observatory Road, 22 kilometres west of Coonabarabran. In our model, Earth is 4.1 kilometres from the telescope dome (the Sun). In the real Solar System, Earth is 150 million kilometres from the Sun!
Our home planet is the third closest planet to the Sun and fifth largest. Perhaps a better name for our planet would be ‘Water’ since nearly 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water. Earth is the only planet name that does not derive from Greek or Roman mythology – the name coming from Germanic or Old English origin. Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System and is between 4.5 and 4.6 billion years old. Earth has one moon and the gravitational interaction between Earth and the moon is slowing down the Earth’s rotation by about 2 milliseconds per century. This planet is the only place in the Solar System and in the Universe, where we know that life exists.
